Promotion and Tenure

Over the past few years the University Promotion and Tenure Committee has frequently discussed the meaning of tenure and approaches to reading and evaluating folders. It has been suggested that I share my own views and approach to this important responsibility and make clear my reasons for believing that it has sometimes not been taken seriously. I want to emphasize at the outset that I am not modifying the current criteria for tenure and promotion. I mean only to outline how I evaluate a candidate’s folder with reference to those criteria.

The mission statement of The Florida State University includes teaching and research as well as public service. Therefore, we expect every successful candidate to demonstrate a substantial commitment to both quality and quantity in teaching and research/creative activities as well as in public service.

I hope this document will stimulate discussion and cause each of us to reconsider the mission of the university and our central role in the successful implementation of our academic functions.
