As one of the nation's most innovative universities, Florida State University fosters an environment that broadly encourages and supports academic innovation across campus to “cultivate an ecosystem that prioritizes and embraces creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial behavior in all endeavors” (FSU Strategic Plan 2023-2027).
FSU faculty, staff, and students are nationally and internationally recognized innovation leaders who move quickly to proactively adopt innovative ideas for improving higher education, integrate new approaches into educational practice effectively and efficiently, and streamline the university’s efforts to invest in and engage with academic innovation.
Innovation in academia happens at the liminal boundaries between disciplines, and FSU supports innovation by encouraging interdisciplinary thinking, providing support for interdisciplinary teaching, and breaking down interdisciplinary boundaries.
Faculty Leadership
Academic Innovation is grounded in faculty leadership, where faculty and staff work together to engage in interdisciplinary innovation and collaboration across departmental boundaries, share innovative ideas and practices with their colleagues across campus, and shape the future of higher education.
Faculty Innovators
Faculty Innovators meet regularly to hold interdisciplinary conversations on topics related to academic innovation, creating an informal network that works to improve communication across campus, coordinate innovative activities and opportunities, and provide a framework for handling innovations that have the potential to disrupt higher education. Faculty and staff gather to share insights and discuss possibilities around academic innovation at the Innovation Hub every Wednesday morning.
Innovation Ambassadors
Innovation Ambassadors are dedicated innovation leaders and champions from each college who meet regularly to share innovative accomplishments, coordinate the innovative work of FSU faculty and staff, and ensure that we are telling the story of FSU Innovation in a coherent fashion with one voice in our marketing and outreach efforts. These individuals comprise an interdisciplinary working group of faculty that provides the necessary leadership to build a culture of innovation on campus.
Strategic Guidance
Academic Innovation is supported and guided strategically by representatives who work together to ensure communication, coordination, and cooperation across campus.

Academic Innovation Committee
The Academic Innovation Committee takes a strategic approach to shaping interdisciplinary cooperation, communication, and coordination of innovation activities across campus. The committee works to increase efficiencies, reduce redundancies, bridge knowledge gaps, and encourage long-term solutions to structural barriers that impede academic innovation in higher education. The Academic Innovation Committee works to support the goals of Vision 2030 to communicate innovation across departmental and disciplinary boundaries; support interdisciplinary, collaborative efforts to innovate across units on campus; engage faculty, staff, and students as active participants in a culture of academic innovation; and broadly share FSU’s innovative accomplishments!
Innovation Hub
Funded by the Office of the Provost, the Innovation Hub offers an interdisciplinary home for innovation on campus. Centrally located in the Shores Building on Landis Green in the heart of campus, the Innovation Hub serves as a catalyst for connecting faculty, staff, and students, and provides them with unique opportunities to engage with new ideas, technologies, and methodologies in a common, consistent, shared, and safe space for experimentation and exploration. The Innovation Hub is guided by an interdisciplinary Steering Committee of faculty and staff who represent the innovation interests of their colleges and programs.
